Israel Resumes Strikes on Gaza Amid Fragile Ceasefire

Israel launched a series of airstrikes on southern Gaza on Sunday, just over a week after a U.S.-brokered ceasefire took effect. The truce, which began on October 10, had halted months of fighting, initiated partial Israeli troop withdrawals, and facilitated a major prisoner and hostage exchange between Israel and Hamas. On October 19, 2025, tensions flared when the Israeli military accused Hamas fighters of firing an anti-tank missile and opening fire on its forces in Rafah, in Gaza’s south. In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it carried out a “massive and extensive wave” of strikes targeting what it described as militant infrastructure. Hamas denied any involvement, insisting it continues to abide by the ceasefire.
The Israeli army reported two of its soldiers were killed during the incident and said it had temporarily suspended humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza. The Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s armed wing, stated it had no operational contact with its units in Rafah and claimed Israel was fabricating pretexts for renewed aggression. According to Gaza’s Civil Defence agency, at least 42 Palestinians were killed in the latest raids, bringing the total death toll since the truce began to 97, with more than 230 others injured. The escalation has deepened divisions within Israel’s government. Far-right ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich openly called for a full resumption of combat, signaling growing uncertainty over the fragile ceasefire’s future.
휴전 합의 이후에도 계속되는 가자지구 공습

이스라엘이 미국의 중재로 성사된 휴전 합의 발효 일주일여 만에 다시 가자지구 남부를 공습했다. 지난 10월 10일 발효된 이번 휴전은 수개월간 이어진 전투를 중단시키고, 이스라엘군의 부분 철수와 더불어 인질 및 수감자 교환을 포함한 인도적 조치들을 추진하는 내용을 담고 있었다. 10월19일, 이스라엘군은 하마스 대원이 가자 남부 라파 지역에서 자국 군대를 향해 대전차 미사일을 발사하고 사격을 가했다고 주장했다. 이에 대해 이스라엘군(IDF)은 “광범위한 공습 작전”을 전개하여 무장세력의 기반 시설을 타격했다고 밝혔다. 반면 하마스는 이러한 공격에 가담한 사실이 없으며 여전히 휴전 합의를 준수하고 있다고 반박했다.
이스라엘군은 이번 교전으로 자국 병사 2명이 사망했다고 발표하며, 가자지구 내 인도적 지원 물자의 반입도 일시 중단했다고 밝혔다. 하마스의 군사 조직인 카삼여단은 라파 지역 내 자체 병력과의 연락이 두절된 상태라며, 이스라엘이 재공격의 명분을 조작하고 있다고 주장했다. 가자지구 소식통에 따르면 이번 공습으로 최소 42명의 팔레스타인인이 사망했으며, 휴전 발효 이후 누적 사망자는 97명, 부상자는 230명 이상으로 집계되었다. 이번 사태는 이스라엘 내부 정치적 갈등을 더욱 심화시키고 있다. 극우 성향의 이타마르벤그비르 국가안보장관과 베잘렐스모트리히 재무장관은 “전면전 재개”를 촉구하며 휴전의 미래가 불투명함을 시사했다.
