강의소개
지난 1월 트럼프 행정부가 출범한 이후 이란-미국 관계에 대한 여러 전망이 나오고 있는 가운데, 보다 정확한 예측을 위해서는 두 국가의 이전 관계를 검토해야 할 필요가 있다. 오늘날 이란과 미국은 국제 무대에서 대립하는 사이이지만 둘의 관계가 항상 그러했던 것은 아니다. 현재 미국-이란 간 관계는 1979년 이란 혁명 이후의 발생한 여러 사건들이 누적되면서 형성된 것이며 그 과정에서 표출되었던 일부 이란 대중들의 미국에 대한 분노어린 시선은 혁명 이전 미국-이란 관계에 기반을 두고 있기 때문이다. 따라서 이 강연은 20세기 초부터 현재까지 미국-이란 간 관계의 역사를 개관한 뒤 이를 기반으로 트럼프 행정부 시기 미국-이란 관계에 대해 전망한다.
While there have been many predictions of Iran-U.S. relations since the second Trump administration took office in January, it’s worth examining the history of Iran-U.S. relations to make more accurate predictions. Today, the U.S. and Iran are adversaries on the international stage, but this was not always the case. The current Iran-U.S. relationship was shaped by the cumulative effect of events following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, and some of the Iranian public’s resentment toward the U.S. has its roots in pre-revolutionary Iran-U.S. relations. This lecture will provide an overview of the history of Iran-U.S. relations from the early 20th century to the present, and then provide an outlook on Iran-U.S. relations under the Trump administration.
