The Risk of War Escalation in the Middle East Rises as Tensions Between Lebanon and Israel Intensify

Due to simultaneous incidents across Lebanon on September 17-18, 37 people were reported dead and about 3,000 injured as of the 22nd, after explosions of communication devices used by Hezbollah. While the cause of the incident remains unclear, Israel is suspected to be behind it. Allegations suggest that Israel set up a paper company in Europe to sell the devices with embedded explosives and detonators to Hezbollah.

The day after the communication device explosion, on the 19th, the Israeli Defense Forces attacked over 100 Hezbollah rocket launchers in southern Lebanon, and Israeli attacks are ongoing. It has been reported that the top commanders of Hezbollah were killed in this attack.

Before this incident, Hezbollah and Israel had been in continuous conflict since the Israel-Hamas war broke out in October last year. Hezbollah had been attacking northern Israel, causing residents near the Israeli border to flee. This situation had heightened dissatisfaction among the displaced Israeli residents towards Prime Minister Netanyahu’s government. Israel has expressed its intention to continue military operations until the northern residents can safely return.

Following the device explosion incident, the United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting, urging both Israel and Hezbollah to exercise maximum restraint. However, the intensity of Israel’s bombing of Lebanon continues to rise, and the number of casualties is also increasing. In response, the United States is reportedly planning to deploy a new aircraft carrier and has issued evacuation orders for its citizens residing in Lebanon, raising concerns about further escalation.

레바논 전역에서 9월 17-8일 동시다발로 헤즈볼라가 통신 기기로 사용하는 무전기와 무선호출기가 폭발하여 22일 기준 37명이 사망하고 3,000여명이 부상을 입은 것으로 알려졌다. 이번 사고의 원인은 밝혀지지 않았지만 이스라엘이 배후에 있는 것으로 추정되고 있다. 즉, 이스라엘이 유럽에 페이퍼 컴퍼니를 설립하여 폭발물과 기폭 장치가 삽입된 무전기와 무선호출기를 헤즈볼라에 판매하였다는 주장이 제기되고 있다.  통신 기기 폭발 사고 다음 날인 19일 이스라엘 방위군은 레바논 남부에 위치한 헤즈볼라 로켓 발사대 100여 곳을 공격하였다. 이번 공격으로 헤즈볼라 최고 사령관도 사망한 것으로 알려졌다. 한편, 이번 사고 전까지 헤즈볼라와 이스라엘은 지난해 10월 이스라엘-하마스 전쟁 발발 이후부터 지속해서 대립해왔다. 헤즈볼라는 하마스에 연대를 표명하며 이스라엘 북부를 공격해왔고 이로 인해 이스라엘 국경지대 주민들이 피란 생활을 해오고 있다. 이에 따라, 피란 중인 이스라엘 주민들의 이스라엘 네타냐후 정부에 대한 불만도 함께 고조된 상황이었다. 이스라엘은 북부 주민의 귀환이 이루어질 때까지 군사 작전을 계속하겠다는 의지를 피력하고 있는 상황이다. 이번 통신 기기 폭발 사고 이후 유엔(UN) 안전보장이사회는 긴급회의를 열어 이스라엘과 헤즈볼라 양측에 최대한의 자제를 요청하였다. 하지만 이스라엘의 레바논 폭격 강도는 지속해서 높아지고 있으며 이에 따른 사상자들의 수도 증가하고 있다. 이에 따라 미국은 새로 항공 모함을 보낼 계획인 것으로 알려졌으며 레바논에 거주하는 자국민에게 대피 명령을 내린 상황으로 확전 우려가 고조되고 있다.
