2024 G7 Summit: Urging Ceasefire in Gaza War and Enhancing Humanitarian Aid

During the G7 Summit held from 13 to 15 June 2024, a key focus was the ongoing Gaza war. On the first day of the summit, the G7 leaders unequivocally called on Hamas to accept a ceasefire roadmap proposed by US President Joe Biden. This roadmap, unveiled in May, is a three-phase plan aimed at achieving a truce and the release of hostages. The plan includes a six-week truce during which Hamas would release the remaining living female, elderly, and sick hostages in exchange for Israel releasing hundreds of Palestinian security prisoners, withdrawing the IDF from Gaza population centers, allowing the unrestricted return of Palestinians to all areas of the Strip, and facilitating the daily entry of 600 trucks of humanitarian aid into the enclave.
The G7 nations fully endorsed Biden’s plan, issuing a joint statement on 3 June that emphasized their support for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and a significant increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza. During the Summit, they reiterated their commitment to a two-state solution and urged Hamas to accept the deal. However, the agreement’s success remains uncertain as Israel and Hamas continue to dispute over the terms of ceasefire. Whereas Hamas demands a permanent end to the war, Israel rejects such demand.
Meanwhile, on 14 June, the G7 cautioned Israel against actions that weaken the Palestinian Authority, referencing Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s move to withhold tax funds from the PA. They stressed the importance of UNRWA and other UN agencies in delivering aid effectively. The G7 also expressed deep concern over the high number of civilian casualties in the conflict. They urged Israel to avoid a major offensive in Rafah, warning of severe consequences for civilians.
2024 G7 정상회의: 가자 전쟁의 휴전 촉구와 인도적 지원 강화

2024년 6월 13일부터 15일까지 열린 G7 정상회의에서 논의된 주요 쟁점 중 하나는 가자 전쟁이었다. 정상회의 첫날, G7 지도자들은 하마스가 조 바이든 미국 대통령이 5월 말에 제안한 휴전 로드맵을 수용할 것을 다시금 촉구했다. G7은 이미 6월 3일 공동성명을 통해 바이든 대통령의 계획을 전폭적으로 지지하며 즉각적인 휴전, 모든 인질 석방, 가자지구에 대한 인도적 지원을 지지한다고 강조한 바 있다. 이러한 세계 정상들의 압박에도 불구하고 이스라엘과 하마스의 입장 차이가 존재하는 상황에서 가자전쟁 휴전 여부는 여전히 불확실한 상태이다. 하마스는 전쟁의 영구적인 종식을 요구하고 있으며 이스라엘은 이를 거부하고 있다. 한편 정상회담 이틀 째인 6월 14일, G7은 현재 분쟁으로 인한 민간인 피해에 대한 우려를 표명하며 이스라엘에게 팔레스타인 자치 정부를 약화시키는 행위와 라파에서의 대규모 공세를 중단할 것을 촉구했다. 또한 가자지구에서의 UNRWA를 비롯한 UN 기관들의 인도적 조치가 계속되어야 함을 강조했다.
