The Demise of Iranian President Raisi and the Future Power Dynamics in Iran

On 19 May 2024, a helicopter crash resulted in the death of Iranian President Raisi. All nine people on board, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and East Azerbaijan Governor Maleki Rahmati, perished in the accident. The crash occurred due to poor weather conditions as they were returning to Tabriz after attending the inauguration ceremony of the Giz Galasi Dam in East Azerbaijan Province, where they were joined by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Following Raisi’s death, the administrative power was transferred to Vice President Mohammad Mokhber. A new presidential election must be held within 50 days.
Ebrahim Raisi, the 13th president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, was elected in the June 2021 presidential election. During his tenure, Iran faced a stalemate in the protracted negotiations with the United States over the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), nationwide mass protests in 2022, severe economic conditions, and recent clashes with Israel. However, with strong support from conservatives and the utmost trust of Supreme Leader Khamenei, Raisi was considered a leading candidate to succeed Khamenei as the next Supreme Leader.
As a result, the election of the next president and the succession to the position of Supreme Leader have garnered significant attention regarding the future direction and power dynamics in Iran.
이란 에브라힘 라이시 대통령 사망과 앞으로의 권력 구도 향방

2024년 5월 19일 헬리콥터 추락 사고로 이란 이슬람 공화국 에브라힘 라이시 대통령이 사망했다. 헬기에 동승했던 호세인 아미르압돌라히안 외무장관, 말레크 라흐마티 동아제르바이잔 주지사 등 9명 전원이 사망했다. 19일 오전 이란 북서부 동아제르바이잔주에서 열린 기즈 갈라시 댐 준공식에 아제르바이잔 일한 알리예프 대통령과 함께 참석한 뒤 타브리즈로 돌아오던 중 악천후로 헬기가 추락해 사망했다. 이에 이란의 행정부 권력은 이란 12명 부통령 중 선임인 모하마드 모크베르(Mohammad Mokhber)에게 이행되었다. 또한, 새로운 대통령을 선출하는 선거는 50일 이내에 실시되어야 한다. 이번 사고로 사망한 라이시 대통령은 2021년 6월 대선에 선출된 제 13대 대통령이다. 그의 재임 기간 동안 이란은 포괄적 공동행동계획(JCPOA)을 둘러싼 미국과의 지지부진한 협상, 2022년 전국 전역에서 대규모 시위 그리고 심각한 경제 상황과 최근 이스라엘과의 교전까지 총체적인 어려움에 빠져 있었다. 그럼에도 라이시 대통령은 보수파들의 강력한 지지와 최고지도자 하메네이의 강력한 신뢰를 받아 이란의 최고 지도자 하메네이를 이을 유력한 후보 중 한 명이었다. 이에 차기 대통령 선출과 최고지도자 계승 문제까지 앞으로의 이란의 미래와 권력 구도 향방에 이목이 집중되고 있다.
