In the midst of Israel-Iran tensions, Israel is expected to intensify attacks on Gaza

It has been suggested that Israel had planned a larger retaliatory attack against Iran but reduced the scale of the attack under pressure from allied countries such as the United States. Israel carried out an attack on an Iranian airbase in the Isfahan region in the early hours of the 19th. However, according to reports in the U.S. media, President Joe Biden of the United States, along with foreign ministers from the UK and Germany, emphasized the need to prevent escalation and persuaded Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Furthermore, it was reported that the timing of the retaliatory attack was set for the day after Iran’s attack on the 14th but was postponed. Evaluations also suggest that the focus of the attack shifted to small drones rather than missiles, indicating a calibrated approach to the level of aggression. It can be analyzed that Israel sought to restrain the escalation of war by conducting limited attacks. In response, the Iranian Foreign Minister warned that if Israel carried out further attacks, they would respond immediately and at the highest level.

Meanwhile, amid continued international efforts to restrain escalation towards Israel, signs are emerging that Israel is intensifying pressure on the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on the 21st that they would intensify military pressure on Hamas to rescue hostages held by Hamas. Consequently, it is predicted that ground troops will be deployed to the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip. This strategy can be evaluated as an attempt by Netanyahu to alleviate the dissatisfaction of right-wing factions supporting him by focusing on the war against Hamas instead of engaging in confrontation with Iran, despite opposition from the international community, including the United States, and to boost his own support. According to reports, the Israeli military is planning an attack on the Rafah area while distributing leaflets urging civilians who have migrated to Rafah to evacuate to safe zones. Concerns are growing that Israel’s attacks on Hamas will escalate further, leading to increased civilian casualties.

이스라엘이 이란을 상대로 더 큰 규모의 보복 공격을 계획했으나 미국 등 동맹국의 압박으로 공격 규모를 축소했다는 평가가 제기되었다. 이스라엘은 지난 19일 새벽 이란 이스파한 지역 공군기지에 대한 공격을 감행하였다. 하지만 미국 언론 보도에 의하면 미국 조 바이든 대통령과 영국 및 독일 외무 장관들이 확전을 막아야 한다고 강조하며 이스라엘 베냐민 네타냐후 총리를 설득했다는 것이다. 또한, 보복 공격 시점도 이란의 공습 다음 날인 14일로 잡았으나 연기한 것으로 알려졌다. 공격 무기도 미사일이 아닌 소형 무인기에 초점을 맞추면서 공격 수위를 조절했다는 평가가 나오고 있다. 이스라엘이 제한적 공격을 감행함으로써 전쟁의 확전을 억제하고자 했다고 분석할 수 있다. 이에 이란 외무 장관은 이스라엘이 추가로 공격을 감행한다면 즉각적이고 최대 수준의 대응을 하겠다고 경고하기도 했다.

한편, 국제 사회의 이스라엘에 대한 확전 억제 만류가 지속되는 가운데 이스라엘은 가자 지구에 대한 압박을 더욱 강화하려는 조짐이 나타나고 있다. 이스라엘 베냐민 네타냐후 총리는 하마스가 억류 중인 인질 구출을 위해 하마스에 대한 군사적 압박을 강화하겠다고 21일 밝혔다. 이에 따라, 가자 지구 남부 도시 라파에 지상군 투입이 감행될 것으로 예측된다. 이는 미국을 포함한 국제 사회의 반대로 이란과 확전을 자제하는 대신 하마스 전쟁에 집중함으로써 네타냐후 총리를 지지하는 극우 세력의 불만을 완화하고 자신의 지지도를 끌어올리겠다는 전략으로 평가할 수 있다. 언론 보도에 의하면 이스라엘군이 라파로 이주해간 민간인들에게 안전지대로 대피하라는 전단지를 배포하면서 라파 지역에 대한 공격을 계획 중인 것으로 알려졌다. 이에 따라, 이스라엘의 하마스에 대한 공격은 더욱 수위가 높아지고 이로 인한 민간인 피해만 증가할 것이라는 우려가 나오고 있다.
