Escalating Military Confrontation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis amid Persistent Regional Security Instability<\/b><\/p>\n

The military confrontation between Saudi Arabia and Yemen\u2019s Houthi rebels, which intensified in September 2026, escalated further in October. In particular, the Houthis expanded their attacks on civilian transport infrastructure, including international airports, resulting in significant casualties. On 6\u20137 October, the Houthis launched attacks on airports in several southern Saudi cities, including Jazan, Najran and Abha, before targeting King Khalid International Airport in the capital, Riyadh. An attack on Riyadh International Airport on 8 October reportedly killed three Saudi nationals and damaged an aircraft belonging to a Saudi airline. Subsequently, on 10 October, a Houthi missile attack on the airport reportedly killed at least 12 people and injured more than 300 others. The attacks temporarily disrupted airport operations, prompting international airlines to cancel or reroute flights to Riyadh and causing significant disruption to air transport.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has intensified its military response as Houthi attacks have escalated. The Saudi-led coalition carried out airstrikes against the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, and Saada, a major Houthi stronghold. At the same time, ground clashes between Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces and the Houthis have intensified. In particular, continued fighting in Taiz and Shabwa has further aggravated instability within Yemen. These developments suggest that the relative military stability maintained since the UN-brokered truce in 2022 has significantly deteriorated. Above all, Saudi Arabia faces a strategic dilemma: while it must deter further Houthi attacks, prolonged military involvement in Yemen could undermine its domestic economic reforms and efforts to attract foreign investment.<\/p>\n

The responses of regional and international actors to the escalating confrontation also warrant attention. On 18 October, Egypt expressed its readiness to support Saudi Arabia\u2019s security. Against this backdrop, the Egyptian parliament has been discussing a proposal to authorise military action against the Houthis. However, the relevant parliamentary vote has been postponed until 26 October, leaving the prospect of direct Egyptian military involvement uncertain. Meanwhile, on 10 October, US President Donald Trump stated that Washington was considering joining Saudi military operations against the Houthis.<\/p>\n

Iran, by contrast, has expressed its willingness to mediate in an effort to de-escalate military tensions. On 20 October, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran was prepared to facilitate negotiations between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis but had not yet received an official response from either side. He also warned that military intervention by external actors, including Egypt, could further complicate the conflict in Yemen.<\/p>\n

Taken together, these developments have heightened concerns that the military confrontation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis could extend beyond Yemen\u2019s internal power struggle and evolve into a broader regional security crisis in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
