The attacker was Hamam al-Hammami, an Omani national serving as the flight&#8217;s co-pilot. During the flight, he reportedly struck the captain in the head with an emergency axe kept in the cockpit and attempted to seize control of the aircraft. With the captain seriously injured, the plane began to descend rapidly, creating a potentially catastrophic situation. Fortunately, passengers and crew members managed to overpower the co-pilot. Relief pilots who were also on board then took control of the aircraft and made an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia, narrowly averting disaster.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ten days after the incident, UAE prosecutors revealed that the attack was not simply an attempted hijacking but a premeditated suicide terrorist operation. According to prosecutors, al-Hammami had intended to crash the aircraft into Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv, causing mass casualties. He reportedly admitted that he had been inspired by the September 11 attacks in the United States in 2001. To prepare for the operation, he had previously taken flights to Tel Aviv to study the flight routes and airport facilities. UAE authorities announced that al-Hammami had acted alone, without ties to any outside organization. Israeli authorities, however, have launched a separate investigation, leaving open the possibility that other individuals or groups may have been involved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The incident has raised questions about how it might affect relations between the UAE and Israel. The two countries normalized diplomatic relations under the Abraham Accords in 2020 and have since expanded economic ties and people-to-people exchanges. Regular direct flights were established, and the number of Israeli tourists visiting Dubai increased significantly. Yet the attempted hijacking has exposed a troubling reality: the very civilian connections that have brought the two countries closer together can also become targets of terrorism amid the region&#8217;s fragile security environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Israel, some have called for the UAE to tighten background checks and security screening for foreign pilots. Al-Hammami reportedly studied in Australia until 2017, during which time he was exposed to online content glorifying suicide attacks and became drawn to extremist interpretations of takfir. Takfir refers to the practice of declaring another Muslim an unbeliever or apostate. While the concept has a longer history in Islamic theology, extremist groups have used it to justify violence against fellow Muslims, an interpretation widely rejected by mainstream Islamic scholars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Al-Hammami had previously worked for Oman Air but was reportedly removed from flying duties over concerns about his extremist views. He subsequently worked for Royal Air Maroc, Morocco&#8217;s national airline, before joining Flydubai. Following the incident, photographs of figures associated with al-Qaeda, including its former leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, also appeared on his social media accounts. For Israel, the fact that an airline operating flights to its territory had hired a pilot with such a reported background has become a serious security concern.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The attempted hijacking illustrates how hostility toward Israel among individuals in neighboring countries can pose security threats despite diplomatic normalization at the government level. Lone-wolf terrorist attacks are particularly difficult to anticipate because they do not necessarily involve the organizational structures, communications, or preparations associated with coordinated terrorist operations. They can also inflict devastating casualties with little warning. The incident serves as a reminder that sustaining cooperation and civilian exchanges between the UAE and Israel will require more than diplomatic agreements and economic partnerships.
