In particular, the arrest in March of Ekrem \u0130mamo\u011flu, the Mayor of Istanbul and a leading contender for the next presidential election, sent shockwaves through the political arena. Although the judicial action was officially framed around allegations of corruption and links to terrorism, it provoked strong backlash from the opposition and civil society, who denounced it as a case of \u201cpoliticized justice.\u201d Protests and demonstrations spread across major cities, and the incident went far beyond an individual legal issue, raising structural questions about electoral fairness, judicial independence, and freedoms of the press and expression, while reaffirming the authoritarian nature of the Erdo\u011fan administration.<\/p>\n Socially, 2025 is likely to be remembered as a year in which disaster and insecurity became part of everyday life. The powerful earthquake that struck the Marmara region in October did not result in massive casualties, but it starkly exposed the vulnerabilities of major urban infrastructure and the limitations of the country\u2019s disaster response system. At the same time, nationwide drought and water shortages affected agricultural production, energy supply, and urban life, underscoring that the climate crisis is no longer an abstract discourse. Despite the government\u2019s short-term response measures, unequal disaster management and the disproportionate burden placed on vulnerable populations contributed to growing public discontent.<\/p>\n Economically, the year was marked by a widening gap between nominal growth and lived economic reality. While GDP expanded, high inflation and rising living costs continued to erode household purchasing power. The Central Bank\u2019s accommodative monetary policy and interest-rate adjustments were aimed at short-term economic stimulus, but public confidence in price stability remained limited. Employment insecurity among small and medium-sized enterprises and young people, escalating housing costs, and exchange-rate volatility demonstrated that economic issues were not merely numerical indicators but were directly intertwined with broader social instability. Externally, efforts were made to strengthen cooperation with international financial institutions and recalibrate relations in diplomacy and the defense industry, yet these initiatives were insufficient to fundamentally resolve T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s structural vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n Overall, 2025 was a year in which T\u00fcrkiye simultaneously experienced fractures in three key domains: political authoritarianism, social insecurity, and economic pressure.
