When Tekin assumed office on the 8th, CHP members and supporters blockaded the party headquarters in Istanbul, but police dispersed them using tear gas. Tekin\u2019s appointment is seen as an attempt by the government to weaken the opposition, and since Tekin is an ally of former chairman Kemal K\u0131l\u0131\u00e7daro\u011flu, the move is also expected to deepen divisions within the CHP. After the 2023 presidential election defeat, K\u0131l\u0131\u00e7daro\u011flu stepped down but remained as a senior figure, with some in the party calling for his return. The September 2 ruling concerned the Istanbul branch, while a separate lawsuit in Ankara on September 15 challenged the legitimacy of the 2023 CHP general congress itself. On September 14, a day before the trial, some 50,000 people rallied in Ankara to denounce judicial repression against the opposition.
