Recognition of Palestine by Western States<\/b><\/p>\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Saerom Han (Sookmyung Women’s University)<\/strong><\/p>\n On 21 September 2025, four Western states (the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Portugal) formally recognised Palestinian statehood in a series of coordinated announcements. The move marked the first time members of the G7 took such a step. Leaders framed the decision as both a moral obligation and a political necessity: Canada\u2019s Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged support for Palestine\u2019s \u201cpeaceful future,\u201d while Australia\u2019s Anthony Albanese described recognition as affirming Palestinians\u2019 \u201clegitimate and long-held aspirations.\u201d British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stressed that recognition was essential to preserve any chance of a two-state solution, warning that at present neither Israel\u2019s security nor Palestinian statehood was guaranteed.<\/p>\n The timing was deliberate. The declarations came on the eve of a special UN General Assembly summit, convened on 22 September under a French- and Saudi-led initiative to revive negotiations toward a two-state solution. President Emmanuel Macron is expected to announce France\u2019s own recognition, describing it as a \u201cnecessity\u201d backed by several European partners. The diplomatic effort seeks to inject momentum into peace talks after years of stagnation and escalating violence.<\/p>\n Israel\u2019s leadership reacted sharply. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the UK\u2019s decision as \u201can absurd prize for terrorism,\u201d vowing to resist what he called dangerous international pressure. The United States also distanced itself, dismissing the recognitions by its allies as largely \u201cperformative.\u201d<\/p>\n It remains uncertain whether recognizing Palestine as a state, despite its lack of clearly defined territory and a fully functioning government, can lead to tangible change beyond rhetorical significance. Nevertheless, the support of major Western powers, particularly that of the United Kingdom, often perceived as a principal instigator of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, is likely to exert
