Gulf States\u2019 Position on Israel\u2019s Airstrike in Qatar<\/b><\/p>\n

At the time of the strike, the Hamas leaders were reportedly reviewing a U.S.-proposed mediation plan that included terms for a ceasefire and hostage exchange. The strike killed Hamas operatives as well as Qatari security personnel. The fact that Israel launched such an attack without warning in the very heart of Doha\u2014a city that had served as the venue for negotiations between Hamas and Israel\u2014sharply heightened Qatar\u2019s and other Gulf states\u2019 perception of a grave security threat.<\/p>\n In response, leaders of Arab and Islamic countries convened an emergency summit in Doha on the 15th, where they issued strong condemnations of Israel. Heads of state from sixty countries called for a reassessment of diplomatic and economic ties with Israel and even proposed suspending its UN membership. Meanwhile, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) convened a defense ministers\u2019 meeting and adopted a joint statement denouncing Israel\u2019s strike on Qatar. The ministers also agreed to expand intelligence-sharing among member states and to establish a joint ballistic missile early-warning system.<\/p>\n Additionally, during the Pakistani prime minister\u2019s visit to Saudi Arabia, the two countries signed a mutual defense treaty. Speculation has emerged that Pakistan\u2019s nuclear arsenal could, in effect, provide Saudi Arabia with a nuclear umbrella.<\/p>\n Israel\u2019s strike on Qatar has intensified doubts about the United States\u2019 willingness\u2014or ability\u2014to guarantee Gulf security, accelerating the Gulf states\u2019 search for new security partners. Reports that former U.S. President Donald Trump had been briefed in advance about Israel\u2019s plans have further eroded Middle Eastern countries\u2019 trust in the United States.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
