Syria, Assad regime collapses, civil war ends after 13 years<\/b><\/p>\n
Hwang Yuihyun (SNUAC)<\/strong><\/p>\n On December 8, the Syrian rebel coalition, the Islamist armed group Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), occupied Damascus and declared victory over the Assad regime and end of the civil war. Meanwhile, it was confirmed that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad left Syria for Russia just before the fall of Damascus, so the Assad regime collapsed after 53 years and the Syrian civil war ended with the victory of the rebels after 13 years.<\/p>\n The civil war that had been going on for 13 years ended in a very short period of time. HTS launched an offensive in northern Syria at the end of November, and quickly took over major Syrian cities, including Aleppo on November 30, Hama on December 5, and Homs on December 7, and took Damascus in just one week after starting the offensive. The reason the Assad regime collapsed so quickly is analyzed to be that the Syrian government forces were greatly weakened by the long civil war, and Iran, Hezbollah, and Russia, which had supported the government forces, lost the ability to support the Assad regime. The armed forces dispatched by Iran and Hezbollah participated in the battle against the rebels in place of the weakened government forces, and Russia supported the government forces with its air force, but Hezbollah suffered a major blow due to the war with Israel, and Iran also lost interest in the Assad regime. Russia also suffered a huge loss of life due to the stalemate in the Ukrainian war, making it difficult to continue supporting the Assad regime. On the other hand, HTS maintained its power in the northern region and recovered its military power after the armed conflict with the government forces virtually ceased in 2020, and was even able to receive support from Turkey. HTS took advantage of the weakened alliance with the Assad regime to launch an offensive and was eventually able to take Damascus in a short period of time.<\/p>\n The future outlook for Syria is uncertain. HTS and other rebel groups have formed the Syrian Salvation Government in northern Syria since 2017, effectively ruling the northern region. Prime Minister Muhammad al-Bashir of the Syrian Salvation Government has been appointed as the interim prime minister, and is expected to run the country alongside ministers who served in the government and the Assad government during the transition period. HTS leader Abu Muhammad al-Julani has promised to stop rebel fighters from looting and to create a government that reflects the will of the Syrian people and represents all of the people, regardless of sect or religion.
