Sultanate Oman and the Republic of Korea celebrates this year the 50th<\/sup> anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations. Although, an agreement to establish relations between the two countries were signed on March 28th<\/sup>, 1974, the friendship and cooperation extends to centuries, dating back to the seventh century where the Maritime Silk Road tied Oman with India and southeast Asia, extending to the southern eastern coast of China, according Dr. Hee-Soo Lee\u2019s new book: Oman: Historical Cooperation and Friendship with the Republic of Korea. The book was published this year to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n

The friendship and cooperation between the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Korea was weaved during the past 5 decades relaying on pillars of mutual respect, understanding and trust in several political, diplomatic, economical, commercial, cultural and human aspects. The deeply rooted relation extended in the last 50 years, as Korea became the third largest trading partner to Oman, with a trade volume of 5.8 billion dollars by the year 2023. Between the years 1970 and 1974, the number was 90,000 dollars. By 1984, it reached 1.3 billion dollars, and the mutual investment between the two countries reached 1.4 billion dollars in 2022.<\/p>\n

Many Korean companies, such as Hyundai Heavy Industries, DAELIM, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, LG, Samsung E&A, HANJIN, DOOSAN, GS Group, have contributed to executing several infrastructure projects in Oman. Such projects included energy production, desalination, docks, oil refineries and manufacturing plants. Oman Shipping Company has built 33 ships to transport oil and gas in Korean shipyards.<\/p>\n

Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) and crude oil are considered main exports of Oman to Korea, in addition to petrochemicals, steel and non-ferrous metals. Oman, on the other hand, imports from Korea cars, heavy construction materials and all kinds of electronics that are ubiquitous in every home in Oman. Importing electrical Korean cars is considered a new level of cooperation between the two countries, in terms of environmentally friendly products that will fulfill 2050 zero carbon vision for both countries. In the same token, the manufacturer, POSCO has been awarded concession for building a green hydrogen project in Duqm area.<\/p>\n

The relationship between the two countries has developed in multiple areas under official care and attention. Also, the signed agreements between the two countries have set a framework for their cooperation and friendship path, where in 2003 investment protection and avoidance of double taxation agreement was signed. In February of this year, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed to promote investments, and the negotiations that has been completed between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Korea on Free Trade Agreement which will promote and advance commercial exchange between the two countries.<\/p>\n

Several meetings for the Omani-Korean Joint Committee and Political Consultation Committee will be held, during this year, where both committees are considered the driving force for cooperation and friendship between the two countries. Additionally, the mutual visits for high-level representatives from both countries, in the past years, had played an effective role in strengthening the bilateral relations. Notably, the Omani Deputy Prime Minister, His Highness Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmoud Al-Said, has visited Korea in 2005 while heading a high-level Omani delegation. On the other hand, Oman had received several Korean Prime Ministers, such as Lee Han-dong in 2001, Kim Hwang-sik in 2012 and Lee Nak-yon in 2018. These high-level visits between the two countries continue to contribute to supporting the mutual ties of friendship and cooperation.<\/p>\n

With respect to cultural exchange, numerous Omani students are enrolled in universities in Korea, and several medical doctors are going through training in Korean hospitals. There has been an increase to the number of Omani tourists visiting Korea, in the past years, thanks to the Korean K-pop wave. Additionally, Korean dramas and music group have become very popular among Omani youths. Also, many Korean students are enrolled in Arabic language programs in Oman at institutions such as, Sultan Qaboos University and Sultan Qaboos College for Teaching Arabic to Non-Native Speakers.<\/p>\n

As part of the 50th<\/sup> anniversary celebrations, Oman\u2019s Ministry of culture, Sports and Youth participated as a spotlight guest at Seoul International Book Fair, during this participation, the first Omani novel translated into Korean, \u201cCelestial Bodies\u201d which won the International Book Prize, was celebrated. The Oman National Archives, in collaboration with the Oman Embassy in Seoul, also published the book \u201cOman: Historical Cooperation and Friendship with the Republic of Korea\u201d by Professor Lee Hee-soo, available in both Korean and Arabic.<\/p>\n

And in the framework of celebrating the 50th<\/sup> anniversary for establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries, Oman 2040 Vision brings a solid ground for strengthening future cooperation between Oman and Korea. The Korean investments in economic sectors, such as clean energy (Green Hydrogen), manufacturing, IT technology, tourism, education, logistics, healthcare and aquaculture will play a role in raising trade exchange and investments between both countries. Oman, with its strategic location on the Arabian Sea-outside the Arabian Gulf, will be a Korean\u2019s strategic partner in the Middle East region, and which will enhance the relations between two countries to another 50 years ahead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
