The European Union (EU) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) held their first summit in Brussels, Belgium, on October 16. On the EU side, the President of the European Council, the President of the European Commission, and key leaders of member states participated. On the GCC side, leaders and senior officials from six countries\u2014Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman\u2014attended.<\/p>\n
In a joint statement, the EU and GCC called for the de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East and emphasized the need for a ceasefire. However, differences between the two sides emerged during the drafting of the final statement. The EU reportedly sought stronger condemnation of Russia, while the GCC wanted harsher criticism of Israel. The GCC refused to include strong language against Russia, leading to a joint statement that condemned Russia’s invasion and called for the immediate, unconditional withdrawal from Ukrainian territory, citing a UN Security Council resolution.<\/p>\n
Regarding Israel, the joint statement condemned the Israeli government\u2019s decision to expand settlements across the occupied West Bank and to legalize settler outposts. However, the GCC countries reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of stronger language on this issue.<\/p>\n
On the subject of Iran, the EU and GCC showed more agreement, jointly urging Iran to reduce regional tensions. Additionally, it was announced that both sides would resume discussions on a trade agreement, signaling a potential strengthening of cooperation between the two blocs.<\/p>\n
Despite opposition from some human rights groups, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman attended the summit, making his presence felt. Meanwhile, Qatar\u2019s leader, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, indirectly expressed dissatisfaction with the EU in his opening speech, warning against double standards.<\/p>\n
