Sustainability and COP28 Outcomes<\/b><\/p>\n

COP28’s achievements should come as little surprise. Over the previous decade the UAE’s leadership had diligently laid the foundation for COP’s future success, when in 2010, the country undertook UAE Vision 2021 that ensured sustainability would be twinned with economic transformation. This Vision enabled the UAE to further strengthen its strategic efforts to diversify and build a long-term green economy and become a global leader in the export and re-export of green products and technologies.<\/p>\n

By 2017, the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 further fortified these efforts by setting out targets to triple the contribution of renewable energy, thus establishing the UAE’s present-day status as a global hub for sustainability. With such a solid and credible underpinning in place, the UAE COP28 Presidency was ideally positioned in 2023 to take the bold, decisive, and necessary steps to deliver transformational action and agreement behind climate action.<\/p>\n

Uniting 198 Parties, the conference’s negotiated text, the UAE Consensus which includes a historic reference to transition away from fossil fuels in a just, orderly and responsible way and a commitment to halt deforestation by 2030. Under COP 28’s Action Agenda, more than USD 85 billion in funding has been successfully mobilized alongside unprecedented international support via 11 pledges and declarations, in line with all four pillars of the Paris Agreement: fast tracking a just and orderly energy transition; fixing climate finance to make it more available, affordable, and accessible; focusing on people, nature, lives and livelihoods; and fostering full inclusivity in climate action.<\/p>\n

COP28 has achieved considerable momentum in progressing sustainable urban development after more than 40 ministers came together to announce a series of milestone partnerships and initiatives in support of progressing subnational climate action for the purpose of accelerating the net-zero transition and climate resilience in cities. The announcements span a multitude of sectors including buildings, waste and resource management systems, urban water resilience, and urban nature restoration.<\/p>\n

Moreover, these agreements have consolidated those already in place such as the Coalition for High Ambition Multilevel Partnerships for Climate Action (CHAMP), launched at COP 28 during Multilevel Action, Urbanization, Built Environment and Transport Day on 1 December, which recognizes and supports the important role cities and their leaders can play in contending with climate change.<\/p>\n

The need for countries to share best practices related to the decarbonization of the cement and concrete industry – a sector which accounts for almost 40 percent of global energy-related CO2 emissions – has also been recognized via the Cement and Concrete Breakthrough initiative which strives to promote clean cement and ensure near-zero emission cement production in every region of the world by 2030.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, a significant global effort to advance decarbonization in waste management and the circular economy and transform waste into resources has also been adopted by governments of all levels, NGOs, and the private sector. This includes the introduction of the Waste MAP platform, the world’s firstever global satellite monitoring system that tracks and measures methane emissions from waste across 20 global megacities that are collectively home to over 100 million people.<\/p>\n

The COP28 Presidency also organized the first ever transport energy ministerial at a COP. The sustainable land transport community, led primarily by the SLOCAT Partnership on Sustainable Transport, who issued a call to action to double the share of energy efficient and fossil-free forms of land transport by 2030. In addition, multi-level action day at COP28 saw the Forest & Climate Leaders’ Partnership’s (FCLP) Greening Construction with Sustainable Wood initiative launched which sets out to halt and reverse worldwide forest loss and land degradation by 2030.<\/div>\n

In accordance with the UAE’s visionary leadership, and its historic and longstanding commitment towards sustainability, the Presidency of COP28 has created a watershed moment in global climate action that reaffirms the country’s position as a world leader in the international climate and development agenda and offers humanity a blueprint for protecting the planet’s future.<\/div>\n
