Fears of Authoritarianism Resurface in Tunisia Ahead of Presidential Election<\/b><\/p>\n

With Tunisia\u2019s presidential election approaching, fears are growing that the country may revert to authoritarian rule under President Kais Saied. Allegations of political repression have intensified, with reports of arbitrary arrests targeting opposition figures and activists.<\/p>\n
Ayachi Zammel, a prominent opposition leader and one of the few challengers to Saied, was detained earlier this month. The official charge involves falsifying voter signatures, but Zammel’s legal team argues this is merely an attempt to exclude him from the race. In August, Tunisia\u2019s electoral commission disqualified three major candidates over alleged irregularities in their submissions. Despite a court ruling to reinstate them, the commission refused to comply, further deepening concerns over the fairness of the upcoming election.<\/p>\n
These actions have triggered widespread protests in the capital, Tunis, where demonstrators have voiced their anger at what they perceive as a return to dictatorship. The protesters, chanting slogans like \u201cDown with dictator Saied\u201d and \u201cNo fear, no terror, the streets belong to the people,\u201d have called for the release of Zammel and other political prisoners.<\/p>\n
Critics argue that Saied, who took sweeping powers in 2021, is using the electoral commission\u2014whose members he appointed\u2014as a tool to consolidate his hold on power by eliminating competition. The president, however, rejects these accusations, claiming that his actions are part of a broader effort to fight corruption and betrayal within the state.<\/p>\n
Since the 2011 revolution that ousted long-time dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, Tunisia was seen as the sole success story of the Arab Spring, transitioning into a democracy with free elections and a vibrant civil society. However, the political landscape has shifted dramatically in recent years. Saied\u2019s consolidation of power, including the suspension of parliament and the drafting of a new constitution, has eroded many of the democratic gains made since 2011.<\/p>\n
