Negotiations between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire in Gaza have reached a stalemate, and within the Biden administration, there’s growing skepticism about the possibility of both sides agreeing to a ceasefire. While President Biden emphasized his commitment to achieving a ceasefire agreement, according to a Wall Street Journal report on September 19, some high-ranking U.S. officials believe it’s unlikely that a ceasefire agreement will be reached before Biden’s term ends in January next year.<\/p>\n
Israel insists that it must maintain a military presence in the Philadelphia Corridor area of Gaza, bordering Egypt, to prevent smuggling between Gaza and Egypt. However, Hamas maintains its existing demand that Israel must completely withdraw from Gaza for a ceasefire to be possible. The issue of determining the number of Palestinian prisoners Israel would release in exchange for the release of Israelis kidnapped by Hamas also remains unresolved. Israel criticizes Hamas for demanding the release of an unrealistic and unacceptably high number of Palestinian prisoners. On the other hand, Hamas claims it is ready to accept a ceasefire proposal based on the plan presented by President Biden in May, and that the delay in negotiations is due to Israel’s stubbornness. President Biden had proposed a plan that included stopping Israeli military actions, complete withdrawal of Israeli forces, and exchange of hostages and prisoners as the first step.<\/p>\n
Amid the stalemate in negotiations, CNN reported on September 19 that a high-ranking official from the Netanyahu government presented a new negotiation proposal to the United States. The proposal reportedly includes Israel releasing Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Hamas releasing all hostages, establishing Gaza as a demilitarized zone, and guaranteeing safe passage out of Gaza for Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who is currently in Gaza. However, experts believe it’s highly unlikely that Hamas and Sinwar would leave Gaza in exchange for a ceasefire, and Hamas has also announced that it will not accept any proposal other than the one presented by President Biden.<\/p>\n
