Last month, following the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash, Iran scheduled a presidential by-election for May 28. If no candidate secures a majority of the votes on that day, a runoff election will be held on July 5. Consequently, six candidates have recently been confirmed to run in the upcoming presidential by-election. To officially run in the Iranian presidential election, candidates must receive approval from the 12-member Guardian Council. Although 80 individuals initially declared their candidacy for this by-election, only six were approved by the Guardian Council to participate in the final presidential race.<\/p>\n
The six confirmed candidates are Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament (Majles); Mostafa Pourmohammadi, former Minister of Justice; Masoud Pezeshkian, former Minister of Health; Amir Hossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi, Vice President; Alireza Zakani, Mayor of Tehran; and Saeed Jalili, former chief nuclear negotiator for Iran. Notable figures who failed to secure a spot among the final candidates include former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Ali Larijani, former Speaker of Parliament, and Eshaq Jahangiri, former Vice President, who are categorized as moderate reformists.<\/p>\n
The Iranian state news agency, IRNA, has identified candidate Pezeshkian as a reformist, while the remaining candidates are described as hardline conservatives. According to recent local polls, Saeed Jalili, the former chief nuclear negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the former Mayor of Tehran and current Speaker of Parliament, and Masoud Pezeshkian, known as a reformist, are leading in popularity. Jalili is particularly noted for his close ties with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and the Revolutionary Guards, indicating his strong conservative stance.<\/p>\n
Despite being the sole reformist candidate, Pezeshkian\u2019s chances of winning depend on whether the conservative vote splits between the two hardline candidates and if reformist supporters consolidate their support behind him. However, voter turnout among reformist supporters is expected to be low.<\/p>\n
On June 17, the six presidential candidates participated in a debate hosted by Iranian state television, discussing strategies for revitalizing Iran\u2019s economy, which has been hampered by Western sanctions. Nonetheless, there were no concrete proposals addressing the resolution of these sanctions, which are directly linked to the country’s economic challenges. With the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and persistent economic difficulties, the upcoming Iranian presidential by-election is drawing significant attention.<\/p>\n
