UN Chief Calls for Global Action Amid Sudan’s Escalating Crisis and Political Turmoil<\/b><\/p>\n

On April 14, 2024, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted the grave situation in Sudan at a press conference. Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in intense political violence, primarily between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) recorded 5,550 incidents of political violence and over 15,550 fatalities. Khartoum state witnessed the highest concentration of violence with more than 3,660 incidents and over 7,050 deaths. The conflict has particularly impacted civilians, with over 1,400 targeted violent events reported countrywide and more than 650 in Khartoum state alone, resulting in at least 1,470 civilian deaths. Darfur experienced the most lethal violence, accounting for 32% of civilian deaths, where targeted attacks were twice as likely to result in fatalities compared to other regions.<\/p>\n
The root of the conflict lies in a power struggle. Toward the end of his presidency, Omar al-Bashir tried to make his regime coup-proof by transforming the Janjaweed militia into the RSF, a paramilitary force under the leadership of Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, who later aligned with Army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to overthrow Bashir in 2019. This alliance initially aimed at a democratic transition but soon degenerated into a full-scale war, drawing various militias and foreign backers into the fray. The conflict has stalled any hopes of regaining national control, turning local actors into de facto security providers.<\/p>\n
This ongoing conflict has plunged Sudan into a severe humanitarian crisis. As reported by international aid agencies, about half of Sudan\u2019s population, or 25 million people, now require humanitarian assistance. The situation has escalated to acute food insecurity for 17.7 million residents, with 4.9 million on the brink of famine. Agricultural disruption has further exacerbated the crisis, affecting the livelihoods of those dependent on farming. Over 8.6 million people have been displaced due to the conflict.<\/p>\n
Against this background, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres criticized the global community’s shifting focus, referencing tensions between Iran and Israel. He also stressed the necessity of a unified effort to end the violence and fulfill the aspirations of the Sudanese people for a stable and peaceful future.<\/p>\n
