President Erdoğan and his ruling party, the Justice and Development Party (AKP), experienced their biggest failure in power in this election. The victory belonged to the opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), with its candidates Ekrem İmamoğlu and Mansur Yavaş winning overwhelmingly with 51% and 60% of the vote, respectively, in the largest cities Istanbul and the capital Ankara. Both mayors also secured a majority in their respective metropolitan councils, granting them much more authority than in their previous terms and positioning them as potential candidates for the next presidential election. Additionally, the CHP achieved unexpected victories in regions that had been under government control for the past 20 years, including Bursa, Balıkesir, Manisa, Kütahya, Adıyaman, Amasya, Kırıkkale, Kilis, and Denizli. Overall, the CHP won in 35 out of 81 districts, while the ruling party won in 24 districts. This reflects the voice of the Turkish people longing for change and presents an opportunity to alter the fragmented political landscape. The election results indicate to conservative voters that Erdoğan is no longer the leader of conservatism, and to AKP supporters that he is no longer capable of addressing economic issues. Furthermore, the rising support for charismatic mayors like İmamoğlu and Yavaş, who oppose the Turkish authoritarian regime, contributed to the significant success of the CHP. Erdoğan’s presidency lasts until 2028. For the CHP to achieve even greater victories, efforts to bridge the gap between secularism and Islamism, which divides the nation, will be necessary. The CHP is being called upon to develop long-term plans for the economy and diplomacy to gain support regardless of ideology.
