On April 13-14, Iran attacked Israel using more than 300 missiles and drones. 99% of the launched missiles were shot down by Israel’s air defense system and intercepted by the United States, Britain, and France stationed in the Middle East, resulting in little damage to Israel. Meanwhile, in addition to Western countries, Jordan also supported Israel and shot down dozens of missiles passing through its airspace.<\/p>\n
Although Jordan and Israel established diplomatic relations in 1994, they do not have mutual defense obligations, and the 2021 agreement for defense cooperation between Jordan and the United States did not contain Jordan’s obligation to support U.S. military operations. The Jordanian government stated that the interception operation was not intended to support Israel’s defense, but to prevent damage that could occur if the missile accidentally fell within Jordanian territory.<\/p>\n
Experts analyzed that this incident clearly revealed that Jordan, while criticizing Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip, has the perception that Israel’s security is directly linked to its own security. It is also analyzed that there are concerns that the country’s security will be seriously threatened if the conflict between Iran and Israel escalates. If Iran’s attack causes great damage to Israel, Israel will also respond strongly to Iran, which will deepen instability in the entire Middle East. Jordan, which borders Israel on the one hand and pro-Iranian regimes in Syria and Iraq on the other, will suffer the most if a full-scale conflict breaks out between Iran and Israel.<\/p>\n
