Iraqi-Korean relations: Friendship and strategic cooperation<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The roots of Iraqi-Korean relations go back to the seventies of the last century during the work of Korean companies in Iraq, especially the Hyundai Company. However, they were not \u00a0developed diplomatically until it was agreed to establish a consular representation between the two countries on April 15, 1981, after which the features of diplomatic relations were drawn between the two countries. The relations became more established after the signing of the trade, economic, technical and scientific cooperation agreement between the two countries in 1983, from which the formation of the Iraqi-Korean Joint Committee emerged.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These relations began to develop after 2003, when the two countries reopened their embassies, as relations between them witnessed unprecedented growth in various fields, as the two countries signed a number of memorandums of understanding for cooperation in the political, economic, cultural and military fields. These relations were strengthened by the large-scale visits conducted by the Iraqi political leaders to the Republic of Korea, such as the President, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq. These visits had a significant impact in attracting Korean companies to work in Iraq. Korean companies were among the first international companies to enter the Iraqi market after 2003, and they contributed to Building many major strategic projects in the field of infrastructure, energy, and transportation. Korean companies carried out the construction of many electrical stations, as is the case with SK, LS, and Samsung. In the field of oil, Korean companies were present in the licensing rounds offered by the Iraqi government, as is the case with KOGAS Company, Samsung and others. In the field of energy, the Hyundai Company built the Karbala refinery, and is currently contributing to the construction of the Basra refinery, and the Daewoo Company is now building the largest strategic projects in Iraq, which is the large Al-Faw port, which will connect the East with the West and shorten the distance between Asia and Europe via Turkey and then to Europe. Iraq called this major project \u201cthe Development Road\u201d and Iraq called on Korean companies to contribute and work in it.<\/p>\n

The past year witnessed many events that indicate a remarkable development in the relations of the two countries. There were many official visits at the ministerial level, as the Korean Minister of Lands, Infrastructure and Transport, as well as the Korean Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, visited Iraq. Iraqi ministers also visited Korea like the Minister of Trade and the Chairman of the National Investment Commission. The ninth session of the Iraqi-Korean Joint Committee was held, which had not been held since 2017. Political consultations between the two countries were also held in its third session, and the level of representation in it was raised to the level of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. An agreement was also signed to exempt holders of diplomatic passports from entry visas between the two countries. More than one parliamentary delegation from the two countries made mutual visits to consolidate parliamentary relations. Last year also witnessed the resumption of the Bismayah residential project implemented by Hanwha Company, which is the largest residential project implemented by a Korean company outside Korean territory. There will be a big ceremony to celebrate the re-work of this major project by Hanwha Company which will be attended by senior Iraqi officials as well as the Korean Minister of Lands and Infrastructure. There are many areas on the horizon in which we are working to achieve cooperation between Iraq and Korea by benefiting from the great expertise that Korean companies possess in the field of construction and building infrastructures. We held meetings with many major Korean companies and presented to them approximately 800 investment opportunity in all fields. We look forward with great interest to the largest share of these investment opportunities being for the benefit of Korean companies who have a long and honorable history in Iraq through their projects implemented in Iraq that demonstrated high commitment, transparency and credibility.<\/p>\n

Iraq and Korea have great relations that extend to the peoples, as the great rapprochement between cultures and heritage has created a great bridge of communication, and today we see the young generation in Iraq looking forward with great passion to Korean culture and getting to know this country and its culture, which has spread in Iraq through the media and SNS, which has been embodied in art and music accompanied by technological and scientific development. In addition to the passion for Korean food that is available in many Iraqi markets, we also noticed during the period that passed during our work in Seoul that Korean youth are also looking forward to visiting Iraq and learning about its cultural heritage, especially since many of them have learned in Schools about Mesopotamian civilizations, and they believe that the time has come to visit Iraq, and this is what they talk about during the meetings I had with them on many occasions.<\/p>\n

Iraq believes that Korea is a large and important country and has a major role in the world in general and in Asia in particular. We have a vision to advance these relations to the level of strategic cooperation at all levels. We also believe that Iraq is important to the Republic of Korea as it is an important country in the field of energy and is the second country in OPEC in terms of production, and it is an important country for energy security, not to mention that the volume of trade exchange between the two countries exceeded 9 billion dollars in 2023 and we have an ambition to raise it.
