In Oman, the approach of tolerance and coexistence is paramount.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The Sultanate of Oman is located in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula and overlooks three seas: the sea of Oman, the Arabian Gulf, and the Arabian Sea. The strategic location of Oman contributed to it being a hyperlink between the east and the west through history, and the Omanis communicated throughout their 5000-years history with various human civilizations such as the Sumerian, Roman, Pharaonic, Persian, Hindi, and Chinese. Omani ports have been key stops on the Maritime Silk Road since the eighth century AD, when Omani sailors and merchants arrived in East Asia. One of the most prominent Omani merchants was Abu Ubaidah Abdullah bin al\u2014Qasim, who was considered one of the \ufb01rst Arabs to reach China and was honored and praised by the Emperor of China at the time.<\/p>\n

Oman’s geographical location and contact with ancient civilizations contributed to the development of a distinct local environment of openness, acceptance of the other, and tolerance. Those groups that had faced persecution abroad found respect, safety, and peace in Oman, and have been seamlessly integrated into society.<\/p>\n

Tolerance is seen as a vital component in Oman’s history. In its long history, Omani society has never seen religious, denominational, or sectarian bloodshed. Omanis do not practice exclusion; instead, Omani society teaches its inhabitants about citizenship, mutual respect and acceptance of the other.<\/p>\n

More than 1400 years ago, the prophet Muhammad \u201cpeace be upon him, complimented Oman’s values, saying, “If you had come to the people of Oman, so would they neither have insulted nor beaten you\u201d. This is evident in the visit of the envoy of the prophet, peace be upon him, to Oman, who was respected and appreciated by the two Kings of Oman, and they discussed with him the teachings of Islam, its nature, and its guidelines for its followers in terms of values and principles, consistent with Omanis\u2019 characteristics and morals that are uphold the value of tolerance and acceptance of the other.<\/p>\n

Western travelers testi\ufb01ed to the morals and tolerance of the Omanis, as American merchant and diplomat Edmund Roberts recorded in 1833: “All religions in the Sultan’s areas of influence treat their followers with great tolerance, and there are no obstacles that prevent Christians, Jews, or others from practicing their religious rites or building their temples.” This was verified in 1863 by the English missionary William Gifford Palgrave, when he described the Omanis as according to my experience with them “by nature, without a doubt, with the best social relations, and the most human, and tolerance for all races, religions, and customs is present here to a degree that surpasses Europe. They allow Jews, Christians, and Hindus to worship the Lord according to their different religions, dress as they choose, marry and inherit freely, and bury or burn their dead because no one asks, bothers, or stands in their way.”<\/p>\n

This approach of harmony, coexistence, tolerance, and openness to other cultures remains a key component of Omani society’s cohesion, contributing to the society’s economic and social growth, as well as the establishment of security and tranquility among its members. Over the previous five decades, the Omani development process has been successful and consistent, thanks to the synergy and solidarity of the member of the society, as well as their assertion of human and moral values. This approach has been a recurring theme in Omani media output, based on the idea that the values of brotherhood, harmony, and peace, when combined, offer stable foundations for human development in its broadest sense<\/p>\n

By sponsoring a traveling global exhibition titled “Religious Tolerance, Understanding, and Coexistence- A Message of Peace from Oman,” the Sultanate of Oman promoted global tolerance values. The show promotes religious tolerance, mutual understanding, and peaceful coexistence. The show visited 137 capitals and cities before landing in Seoul in 2014. Furthermore, the Sultanate of Oman established the Sultan Qaboos Project for Humanitarian Coexistence, which advocates for the creation of a global ethical system that promotes mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.<\/p>\n

The basic law of the State (the constitution) declares Islam to be the State religion, but it also prohibits religious discrimination and protects people’ right to practice religious rites, which is critical to the teaching of the Islamic religion in places of worship. Furthermore, it is illegal in Oman to abuse any faith in speech or writing.<\/p>\n

His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, May Allah Protect and Preserve him, reaffirmed in his first speech Oman’s commitment and adherence to the values, principles of tolerance and peace, saying “the Sultanate is keen that Oman’s message of peace continues to roam the world, carrying a great legacy and lofty goals that build and do not destroy, that bring closer and don’t be far away, and this is what we will be keen to continue together with you, so that we can all perform with determination and persistence our civilized role and our historical trust”.<\/p>\n

Oman has historically separated itself from extremism and radicalism. Omanis have bonds of love and brotherhood with the rest of the world, helped contributed to build human civilization, and shave messenger of peace and advocates for progress. Rather, Oman’s message of tolerance and peace extended to include concerns of sustainable development, climate, and the human-nature relationship in terms of preserving the environment and keeping a strategic distance from damaging to it.<\/p>\n

Oman will continue to be a symbol of religious tolerance as well as an oasis of fraternity, love, and peace. It will maintain its role as a bridge for reconciliation and dialogue. Its policies will continue to be free of bias and intolerance, and it will be a source of trust for all.<\/p>\n
